Care When You Need It
Comfortable Care, Clear Advice
These tips are only for temporary support and should not replace professional dental treatment.
Handle the tooth carefully by the crown and avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it with clean water without scrubbing. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket or keep it moist in milk while you arrange urgent dental care. The sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
Persistent or intense tooth pain may be caused by decay, infection, damage, or inflammation inside the tooth. Gently rinse your mouth with warm water and keep the area free from trapped food. You may use a suitable over-the-counter pain medication if normally safe for you, but do not place medication directly on the tooth or gums.
If part of your tooth has broken, rinse your mouth carefully and keep any pieces you can find. Try not to bite or chew with the affected tooth. If swelling develops, applying a cold pack to the outside of your face for short periods may help while you arrange a dental appointment.
Swelling around the gums, jaw, or face can sometimes indicate an infection that requires prompt attention. You may also notice tenderness, a bad taste, fever, or increasing pain. Do not ignore worsening swelling. Contact a dentist as soon as possible so the cause can be properly assessed and treated.
